Ezra Furman

A sudden pivot to garage punk. Sort of the musical antithesis of the previous album while also a serious intensification of its general themes. The anger is angrier, the anxiety is more anxious, the sadness is sadder. Basically we turned everything up and ditched the bells and whistles and rock opera narrative. Just a blast of fury as we watch the twenty-first century get darker and darker.

This is the first one we made without Tim producing and playing sax (long boring story, but in short we parted ways with Tim and very much still love him). Down by one musician, I reverted to my first love: punk. But of course since it’s me and my ADHD, there’s a gentle fifties-style love ballad at the center of it all (“I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend”). If you want to spend a half hour inside the mind of a radicalized queer punk with a panic disorder, this one’s for you.
