Ezra Furman

Some major things happened. A global pandemic. Me and my partner having a child. Discovering a weird rare instrument called a Panoptigan. Coming out as a trans woman, to myself and to the brutal internet. And writing what I consider the strongest songs of my career thus far, something of a love note to songwriting heroes like Leonard Cohen, Sharon van Etten, Bob Dylan, Phil Spector.

I think the organizing theme here is that we can’t just scream and cry the rest of our lives in this broken society, but have to build something, we have to find community in each other. We have to find a way to hold ourselves in defiance of institutionalized evil without letting anger eat us alive from within. We have to burn brightly without burning out. So we gather in the temple of broken dreams and we wait for the train to come through, reciting the book of the names of the dead and of the living. Burning on, hoping to light up our small corner of these dark times.

We made this record after not seeing each other for over a year, with John Congleton producing. John whipped us into shape, introduced us to the Panoptigan, and brought out the coolest version of all our half-formed musical ideas. This is synth-heavy anthemic survival music for the troubled 2020s.
